Prof. Wanyama Masinde
Prof. Wanyama Masinde is one of the Continent’s leaders in building capacity for regional integration and trade. He has carried out research, advised and delivered training across the Continent for the African Union; Regional Economic Communities and other Regional Organisations; Governments; Private Sector Institutions; Civil Society Organisations; and, academic institutions. Wanyama’s work focuses on Regional Integration and Trade Policies and Strategies; Trade and Investment; Trade Negotiations; Trade Facilitation, Trade Development and Competitiveness; Economic Diplomacy; Managing and Implementing Regional Integration Projects and Programmes; Assessing, Measuring and Monitoring Regional Integration; Legal and Institutional Frameworks for Regional Integration; Policy Analysis and Capacity Building for Regional Integration.
Wanyama is the Founding Director of the Institute for Regional Integration and Development (IRID) at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa in Nairobi. Besides, Wanyama is a Visiting Professor of Regional Integration at the African Union’s Pan African University Institute of Governance, Humanities and Social Sciences (PAUGHSS) in Yaoundé, Cameroon, and of Public Policy at the Pan African University Institute of Water and Energy Sciences, including Climate Change (PAUWES) in Tlemcen, Algeria. He is also a Fellow of the ECOWAS West Africa Institute (WAI) in Praia, Cape Verde and has been Directing the Course on Regional Integration and Trade in Africa for the 14 Member States of the Macroeconomic and Financial Management Institute of Eastern and Southern Africa (MEFMI). Wanyama, who has served as Capacity Development Advisor at COMESA, has supported the African Union in numerous roles. Wanyama is Lead Expert and Team Leader for the Development and Production of the AU’s African Integration Report – an annual Report on the Status of Regional Integration in Africa. In Kenya, he has served Regional Integration and Trade Advisor at the National Parliament and at the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment; Policy and Strategy Advisor at the Ministry of East African Affairs which included guiding the East African Common Market Negotiations; and Capacity Development Advisor at the Ministry of Trade. He has also recently served as Regional Integration Advisor in the Government of South Sudan.
As well as being a Commonwealth Scholar, Wanyama is an alumnus of the European Commission’s 6th Framework of Excellence Programme for Global Governance, Regionalisation and Regulation (GARNET). Wanyama divides his time between Kenya and South Africa.
